Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has made the mainstream media due to his equine exploits once again. Multiple international outlets have run articles explaining how the leader of the isolated Central Asian nation has honoured himself with a massive bronze and gold monument in the capital city.
A report on the unveiling of the monument by The Guardian states that the entire piece towers some 20 metres off the ground.
The monument features a large statue of President Berdimuhamedov on a horse. That piece is cast in bronze and covered in 24-carat gold leaf. It sits atop a huge chunk of white marble in an area of Ashgabat, the country’s capital.
An official unveiling ceremony took place on Monday (May 25), where white doves and balloons were released. Students reportedly cheered “Glory to Arkadag!” at the unveiling.
