Moonwriter made no qualms about making his presence felt in the first preferred pace of the season at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway on a special Victoria Day program on Monday (May 24).
The Colin Johnson trainee was unheeded in the $3,100 top event of opening day at the Western oval, stopping the clock in 1:55.2 in line to David Dowling. The victory boosted the nine-year-old Sportswriter stallion’s career earnings to $391,515 in his 24th score for owner Debbie Element of Village Green. Soccer Hanover rallied for second while race favourite Heart And Soul was third. Moonwriter paid $6.00 to win.
Trainer Darla MacEachern had a career moment in the first race of the season at Red Shores Summerside when WC Little Willie gave the Summerside horsewoman her first training victory. MacPherson was in the seat for the 2:03.1 on-the-front score.
Trainers Ron Gass and Jeff Wallace finished the day in a tie for leading training at the Prince County oval with two wins each.
Coasttocoastshark was a 1:59.4 winner from the Wallace barn after an 18-month layoff, while Flowersonthebeach was another winner in 1:59.
Gass’ victories came with Kataparka in 1:58.4 and in a maiden-breaking score for Magical Lily Bear in 2:02.
Total handle on the opening-day card was $40,702.
