Carnivore and driver Walter Cheverie prevailed in a four-across finish to win the $2,200 Preferred 2 Pace featured on Saturday night at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Carnivore used the passing lane and defeated the season-debuting All Turain, who was on the far outside in the win photo after closing from the back of the six-horse field. In between the top pair at the wire, Cabo Pan Lucas finished third after leading through fractions of :27.2, :57.3 and 1:27.2 while first over challenger Tempo Seelster was fourth. The time of the mile was 1:57.2.
Carnivore paid $6 to win as the 2-1 second choice in the wagering to All Turain. Trained by Marvyn Webster for Valleygrove Farms of Kensington, P.E.I., the son of Real Desire has started his nine-year-old campaign with three wins in four starts, just a neck short of perfection.
Pleasure Girls ($5.60) earned her second straight victory in the $1,500 Open Handicap Trot when she was left all alone on the front after half the field broke stride early on. Ronnie Gass trains the 10-year-old Dr Ronerail mare and was also in the driver's seat on Saturday as she romped to a 17-length triumph in 2:01.3 for owner Shelley Gass of Cornwall, P.E.I.
