Trainer Danny Romo's award-winning pacer Bettor On Than Off capped off Truro Raceway's first card of the 2026 meet on Friday, May 22, prevailing in a photo finish in the featured Winners Over Pace.
Bettor On Than Off, the reigning local Horse of the Year and 6-5 co-favourite from the inside post in the evening's $2,500 featured finale, took command right from the start for driver Ernie Laffin and led the field of seven through a :28.2 first quarter and a rated second panel, reaching the half in :58.3. Bronx Drifter (Trevin Shive) followed in the pocket while Income Approach (Keith Legge) took over third during the first lap then angled out down the backstretch the final time with the oncoming Nova Scotia Strong (Darren Crowe) forced three-wide in pursuit of the leader past three-quarters in 1:28.1. Bettor On Than Off was game through the final turn and down the stretch, fighting off Income Approach for the nose victory in 1:57.1, with Bronx Drifter closing inside to secure third place over Nova Scotia Strong.
Bettor On Than Off paid $4.60 for the win in his season's debut following an eight-win campaign in 2025 when he was named Horse of the Year by the Truro Harness Horse Owners Association. The seven-year-old Bettors Delight-Lights Go Out gelding now sports 17 career victories to go along with 28 other top three finishes from 67 starts.
Laffin bookended the seven-race Opening Day program, also winning the first race of the season with his own trainee as four-year-old pacing mare Cast Away Moon scored a 2:00.4 maiden-breaking victory in her 32nd career start.
Truro Raceway's 2026 season runs through Nov. 8 with the next live harness racing card on Friday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. (ADT).
