Pictonian Storm Upsets, Cheverie Returns

Pictonian Storm, with catch-driver Gary Chappell in the bike, pulled off a 4-1 upset in the $2,000 featured pacing event on Opening Day (May 22) at Red Shores Summerside in 1:57.1.

The six-year-old son of Western Paradise, trained by Wade Sorrie for owner Walter Simmons, held off Machinthesand (Ken Murphy), while odds-on favourite Mando Fun (Dale Spence) completed the triactor.

In other action, Im On Schedule ($6.60) opened up the season at Summerside with a 2:01 score for Murphy, trainer Devon Wallace and owner David Lewis.

Drivers Marc Campbell and Dale Spence recorded driving doubles, while trainer MacKenzie MacInnis had two winners on the program as racing returned to the Prince County oval for the 131st year.

Driver Walter Cheverie was victorious in his return to racing, guiding Bowyer Hanover to victory in race 5.

Racing returns to Summerside on Sunday, featuring the Ruby Chappell and Bob Dewar Stakes. Post time is at 1:00 p.m. (Atlantic).
