O’Brien Award winners Modern Legend and Caprice Hill turned in sparkling qualifiers on Monday (May 22) morning at Mohawk Racetrack.

Modern Legend made every pole a winning one in his first appearance since January, rating comfortable early splits of :29, :59.1, and 1:28.1 before accelerating home in :27.1 en route to an easy 1:55.2 victory with 2-3/4 lengths clearance over Shock N Rock (Randy Waples). Owner David Drew trained and drove the nine-year-old Modern Art gelding, the longshot winner of the 2014 Canadian Pacing Derby by virtue of a 1:47.2 mile and the owner of 22 other career victories.

On the trotting side, last year's Hambletonian Oaks runner-up Caprice Hill outsprinted her four foes from the outset and faced no challengers through splits of :28.4, :57.1, 1:25.4, and 1:54. Doug McNair drove the four-year-old Kadabra mare to a 19-length qualifying win over Setanta (Rick Zeron) for owner Tom Hill and trainer Tony Alagna.
