Cool Cowboy Coasts In Open

Keith Clark shot Jim Marino trainee Cool Cowboy to the top and held control through the wire to take the $9,000 Open Pace at Century Downs on Monday, May 21 in 1:53.4.

Sent the 2-1 second choice, Cool Cowboy took the front from Southwind Jaden getting away second while the favourite, Iwontdothatagain, parked when floating for position in third. Through a :28 first quarter, the field lined up single file behind Cool Cowboy, who led them through the half in :57.2 and remained on the lead under minimal pressure heading to three quarters, timed in 1:25.2.

Pulling pocket around the final turn, Southwind Jaden attempted a pursuit towards Cool Cowboy, stalling a length and half from the lead while Sabine Pass tracked from second over into the stretch. Sabine Pass soon fanned off cover chasing Cool Cowboy, coming one-and-one-quarter lengths shy of the race winner at the finish. Iwontdothatagain, riding the rail, finished third but was placed last due to interference around the first turn with Da Magician when trying to get to the pylons.

Owned by the J J J Stables and Jim Marino, Cool Cowboy, a six-year-old son of Brandons Cowboy out of the Grinfromeartoear mare Cool Grin, won his second race from 12 starts this year and his 22nd from 87 overall, earning $300,998. He paid $6.10 to win.
