Dan MacRae’s His Boy Elroy ($7.10) dueled down pacesetter Goliath Reigns and parried a late push from Surrealist to capture his seasonal debut in Sunday (May 21) afternoon’s $1,475 featured pacing event at Truro Raceway.
The five-year-old Jeremes Jet entire yielded to Goliath Reigns (Todd Trites) and Desir Dorleans (Dale Spence) from his inside post position to stalk a :29.2 first quarter mile before trainer-driver Bernard McCallum angled him first-over nearing the completion of a :59.1 half mile. His Boy Elroy advanced to duel with Goliath Reigns through a :30.3 third quarter, and would edge away in mid-stretch to hold off the second-over Surrealist (Paul Langille) by a neck in 1:59.2. Fourth-place finisher Badlandia (Darren Crowe) was elevated to third from her third-over trip over the game Goliath Reigns, who was guilty of a pylon violation in the third quarter.
For His Boy Elroy, the victory was his fourth in his last five top-level assignments at Truro, and the 12th of his career.
Trainer Daniel Romo recorded a natural hat trick on the nine-race card, reaching the winner’s circle with Imahawkchick ($4.40, 2:00.4), Lucbobski ($3.80, 2:00.3), and The Hawk ($3.30, 2:04.1) in races two, three, and four respectively. Romo also handled the driving duties on the trio of victorious favourites.
