Woodbine Champ Mine That Bird Wins Kentucky Derby

Canadian champion Mine That Bird rallied along the rail in the stretch to post a 50-1 upset in 135th Kentucky Derby this evening at Churchill Downs giving jockey Calvin Borel his second Derby win in three years

The gelded son of Birdstone began his career winning three stakes at Woodbine Racetrack in 2008 and took home the Sovereign Award as Canada’s top two-year-old for previous owner and trainer Dave Cotey. The only horse in the Derby who has raced in Canada, Mine That Bird is now trained by Bennie (Chip) Woolley and owned by Double Eagle Ranch and Bueno Suerte Equine of New Mexico.

Mine That Bird won the one and a quarter mile race by six and three-quarter lengths in 2:02 3/5 with Pioneer Of The Nile and Musket Man finishing second and third.
