Live harness racing returns to Prince County on Victoria Day with a special afternoon program on Monday (May 22) to start the 2023 season at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

The western P.E.I. track has a 1 p.m. start time for a nine-dash card with the $3,600 Preferred 2 Pace lining up in the eighth race.

Soccer Hanover has rail control in the dash with Jason Hughes picking up the drive for trainer and co-owner Leith Waite, who partners with Les and Spencer Waite. The nine-year-old by Dragon Again has shown he knows how to win in his career and looks for his 30th win on Monday afternoon.

Moonwriter was victorious in his latest start and has Post 3 on Monday from the Colin Johnson barn with Ken Murphy supplying his driving services. Screen Test (Corey MacPherson) also drops from the Preferred 1 level and has Post 2.

Woodmere Ideal Art is fresh off a qualifier with Post 5 for driver David Dowling. The Articulator eight-year-old was a winner at the Preferred level his last start in Summerside on Oct. 12.

Post 4 has Plain Jane riding a three-race win streak for trainer-driver Marc Campbell.

The Backstretch Beat likes Soccer Hanover in the win position.

“Soccer Hanover should be getting back into racing shape now and draws away from that Preferred 1 crowd. Recorded eight wins in 2022 and we bet they notch another one.”

The afternoon finale in the ninth will see Starship Glyde make his three-year-old debut from the Earl Watts stable at Windemere Farms in Springvale for owner Claude Poirier and driver Dowling. The Control The Moment three-year-old was a winner in 1:55.4 as a rookie pacer in 2022. His Monday rivals include Catchme If Lou Can (Campbell) and Montrose Hope (Wayne Hubbard).

Opening day features the Isle Pick 5 with a $1,500 guaranteed pool presented in part by the P.E.I. Harness Racing Industry Association, as well as two Super Hi-5s and a Pik 4 with low 15 per cent takeouts on Race 2. Customers will be treated to wagering BOGO’s, prize giveaways and special segments on the Race Day Broadcast network. Customers on HPIbet.com can also opt-in on a cash back promotion by playing Red Shores.

Summerside kicks off its 2023 season on Monday with live race dates continuing through to Oct. 29.
