Preferreds Co-Featured At Sudbury

Roan Star and Lombo Skyrider A were the winners in a pair of co-featured $11,000 Not Listed Preferred events on Saturday evening at Sudbury Downs

Sent postward as the longest shot on the board, Roan Star managed to beat out his four rivals for the win in the $11,000 Not Listed Preferred Trot.

Roan Star, in rein to Paul Maclean, recovered from an early break after the first quarter in :30.4 and then settled into the fourth position through middle panels of 1:02.1 and 1:33.1. In the stretch, the 6-1 last choice sprinted home to win by a neck over Speedy Desperado (Richard Turcotte) in 2:04.3 while the pacesetter, Broadway Seelster (Michael MacNeill), settled for third.

The nine-year-old son of King Conch scored his third win of the year and 13th of his career lifting his bankroll to nearly $140,000 for trainer France Maclean and Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Wallenstein, Ont.

In the matching pacing event, veteran Lombo Skyrider A pulled off a mild 5-1 upset of his own with trainer Don Gillis, Jr. in the bike.

The 11-year-old son of Panorama led every step of the way through intervals of :28.1, :58.4 and 1:28 before crossing the wire with a length’s lead in 1:58.2. Sjs Nitelife (Paul Maclean) was the runner-up while Astro Lad (Michael MacNeill) and Round About Fame (David Dowling) dead-heated for third in the six-horse affair.

Lombo Skyrider A, a winner of two races this year, is owned by John Bianco of Bolton, Ont. His 39th lifetime score pushed his earnings over the $600,000 mark.
