Sent the 8-5 favourite, Twenty Three Red took control early and cruised to a 1:56.1 victory in the $9,400 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace on Saturday, May 11 at Flamboro Downs.
Driver Alfie Carroll cleared control from post two with Lo Hold A Moonbean ducking into second heading to a :28 opening quarter. Unchallenged to a :58.1 half, Twenty Three Red faced pressure to a 1:27.3 third quarter as Tilikum, sitting last of the quintet, charged first over to within a length of the lead circling the final turn. Twenty Three Red turned away the challenge turning for the wire and held control as Lo Hold A Moonbean rallied from the pocket late to finish second by three-quarter lengths. Tilikum settled for third.
A six-year-old mare by Mach Three, Twenty Three Red competes for owner Macks Stable. She won her third race from 17 starts this season and her 13th from 119 overall, earning $226,786. Richard Moreau trains the $5.40 winner.
