According to recently released data by the New York State Division of Lottery, New York's horse racing tracks generated more than $555 million for education during the 2011 fiscal year (April 2011 to March 2012) through video lottery wagering

Each track sets aside a percentage of the net win (the net revenues remaining after payout of prizes to players or "hold") as their education contribution, the portion of Net Win allocated to the State Education Fund for direct aid to education. For the 2011 fiscal year, the net win for New York State Lottery's video gaming was in excess of $1.4 billion. The contribution breakdown by track is as follows:

In 2011-2012, revenue generated by horse racing for education was equivalent to the annual salaries of over 8,000 teachers.
