Last at the mid-mile mark, Willyorwonthe caught race leader Fox Valley Veto at the wire with a big stretch rally in Sunday night's $11,500 Preferred 2 Trot at Flamboro Downs.
Leaving from post three, Fox Valley Veto overtook inside starter Fork into a :29 opening quarter and proceeded to the half in :59.2 and three-quarters in 1:29. Meanwhile, Willyorwonthe was shuffled to last as 9-5 co-favourite Its Huw You Know began to advance first-up from the backfield. As Its Huw You Know progressed outside, Willyorwonthe followed his cover and made late gains to catch the front-striding Fox Valley Veto, who was up three lengths turning for home. Willyorwonthe prevailed in 1:58.2 over Fox Valley Veto in a photo finish, with Fork finishing third ahead of Its Huw You Know.
Willyorwonthe paid $5.60 to win. Owned, trained and bred by Bill Megens, the five-year-old Angus Hall-Mikestory gelding has earned victories in one-third of his nine starts this year. Lifetime, he has won 16 races and nearly $160,000 in purses.
Bob McClure worked out the winning trip aboard Willyorwonthe for his first of four straight driving victories on Sunday night. The Chad Milner-trained In Spades ($3.50) completed his driving grand slam in the $8,500 Preferred 3 Pace, scoring by four lengths in 1:53.2 for owners Harness Horsepower Inc. and Frank Monte.
Flamboro's 2018 win leader Robert Shepherd match McClure's four wins on the 10-race program.
