Quebec Pacing Series Begins

The Quebec-bred series for pacers aged four and five years old kicked off on Saturday afternoon at Hippodrome Quebec with four $6,000 divisions

Driven by Steeven Genois, five-year-old mare Lizo Maggs ($3.50) romped to a seven and a half length triumph in her second start of the year in 2:00.4 over Maiden Heaven and Shari Drummond. Normand Plourde of Pintendre, Que. trains and owns Bolero Master-Liz Drummond miss, who notched her seventh career win and pushed her earnings to $26,917.

Making his first start for new owner Louison Morin of Beauceville, Que., five-year-old gelding Whitemountainpower ($2.10) and driver Stephane Brosseau crossed over from the outside six post and cruised wire-to-wire to win the next division in 1:58.3 by nearly three lengths. Electric Syl and Rocky Bayama finished second and third. The son of Yankee Cam out of Message Hanover notched his first win in 11 seasonal starts for trainer Marc Andre Simoneau. He has won nine times while earning $47,567 lifetime.

Five-year-old mare Godiva Beachgirl ($5.70), driven by Jocelyn Gendron, settled for a pocket ride behind slight favourite Petite Courageuse and then edged her out at the wire for the career-best 1:59 score, her first in three starts this year. Lady Luna rounded out the top three finishers nearly two lengths behind. The Bolero Master-Im A Beach mare, a winner of five races and $27,523 lifetime, is owned, bred and trained by Raymond Larose of ST-Henri-De-Levis, Que.

With Pascal Berube in the sulky, five-year-old Shanghai Tiger ($2.50) turned back eventual third place finisher Mathers Shanghai and runner-up Ghostbuster en route to a one length 2:00.1 victory in the final division. Rene Allard trains and co-owns the Shanghai Phil-Kendraandemily gelding, who is now two-for-two this Quebec racing season and three-for-12 on the year. Investissement K F B of Sorel-Tracy, Que., and Andre St. Laurent of Saint-Sulpice, Que. also share ownership. The 11-time career winner has banked $65,417 to date.
