Protégé Seelster failed to hit the board when sent off as the favourite in his latest outing at Woodbine Racetrack, but he redeemed himself with an 18-1 upset in Tuesday’s $15,000 Preferred 2 Trot at Georgian Downs

. Paul MacKenzie worked out a sweet pocket trip for the gelding, and the Corey Johnson pupil didn’t let it go to waste.

Leaving from Post 7, MacKenzie left hard with the gelding and wound up getting parked by Hour Lavec past the quarter-pole in :27.2 before holding up the white flag and tucking into the two-hole. Hour Lavec proceeded to steamroll through fractions of :56.3 and 1:25.1, but he couldn’t fend off Protégé Seelster when that foe rallied in the lane. Protégé Seelster used a :29.2 final frame to sneak past Hour Lavec for the neck decision in 1:54.4. Chinnys Wings, who was last at the head of the lane, was a half-length back in third.

Sent off as the second longest shot on the toteboard, the five-year-old son of Striking Sahbra-Pepi Lavec won for the fourth time this season in eight trips to the track. The 15-time winner, who is owned by Mac Nichol of Burlington, ON, has banked $223,827 to date.
