Ungawa swept to the lead on the backstretch, created a cushion on the last turn, and sailed home to win the $22,000 conditioned feature trot for five-year-olds and younger at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Monday, April 27.
Four horses went by rail starter Ungawa into the first turn, with First Class Mass (James MacDonald) driving on to make the front past a :27.3 first quarter. Paul MacDonell then sent Ungawa on a backstretch brush to the lead, getting him there at the half in :57.3. Unagawa kicked away from First Class Mass turning for home, and with the break of the advancing Greenarrow Hanover (Billy Davis Jr.) on the last turn, he had a clear lead of 2-1/4 lengths at three-quarters in 1:25.4. Ungawa pulled farther away down the lane, and with a few reminders from MacDonell, cruised to victory in 1:53.3. First Class Mass made late gains to cut the margin to 1-3/4 lengths. Validus (Todd Ratchford) was third.
Ungawa took his first win in three starts this year and improved his career record to four-for-13. The four-year-old son of Greenshoe-The Power Of Many, trained by MacDonell for the Estate of Dale C. Towle, has now earned $55,780. He returned $3.90.
