Royalty Beer, eighth and last throughout last week’s top trot, this time was in front the whole way as he won the $12,500 Preferred Handicap Trot at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Monday, April 27.
Samuel Fillion summoned the gelding’s usual gate speed to reach the lead from post six, and Royalty Beer enjoyed first-half panels of :29.2 and :59 alone on the engine. He accelerated to three-quarters in 1:27.1, keeping the first-over My Buddy Sam (Brady Galliers) in the rearview mirror down the backstretch, but that rival began to make headway as they turned into the stretch. With My Buddy Sam and pocket-sitter Buttinski (Austin Sorrie) closing on either side of the pacesetter, Royalty Beer dug in to secure a half-length victory in 1:57. My Buddy Sam got up for second over Buttinski.
Royalty Beer has won three of his last four Western Fair Preferred starts and is five-for-14 on the year. The seven-year-old son of Royalty For Life-Beer Maggs is owned by trainer Jean-Francois Maguire of Carlisle, Ont. and Ecuries Maguire Inc. of Sainte-Marie, Que. He has won 39 times in 121 career starts and has built a bankroll of $475,737. His backers received $4.20 for a $2 wager.
