S-Bred Saved After Ill-Advised Dip

It was two months ago when a racehorse made international news after he got loose and went on a two-hour swim. Although the situation is different, a Standardbred made the news over the course of the past few days when he decided to go for a ‘swim’ on his property and had to be rescued.

It was nothing like Rebel Rover’s recent dip in a Queensland bay, but as an article by NewsHub explains, a 16-year-old Standardbred named Jimmy fell in a water-filled ditch on his West Melton, Christchurch property and needed significant help getting out.

The article states that a local fire department was called to the situation and that an excavator was also called in. The excavator dug a ramp along a side of the ditch. After roughly one hour, Jimmy was gently encouraged to emerge from the water. Hay and a lot of TLC was his prize – not including an examination.

Jimmy was checked over by local trainer Geoff Dunn, who said the horse should be a bit sore, but fine after the ordeal.

“It’s a good result – it could’ve been disasterous,” Jimmy’s owner, Stuart Armstrong, was quoted as saying.
