Beep Bop A Lula triumphed in the $16,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Pace at Century Downs on Wednesday, April 23, capturing the win in a thrilling stretch drive.

It was a battle for the lead early, with Beep Bop A Lula and driver David Kelly initially taking command before Sunshineatthebeach (Mike Hennessy) seized control. The opening quarter was paced in :27.3, and the half was reached in :56. Alberta’s 2024 Horse of the Year, Outlawguns N Roses (Phil Giesbrecht), mounted a first-over challenge down the backside, with Beep Bop A Lula popping out from the pocket to provide cover. In the final strides, Beep Bop A Lula powered home to win by a head in 1:54.3, returning $26.10. Outlaw Blue Isle (Jamie Gray) battled hard to finish second, while Sunshineatthebeach managed to hold on for third.

A five-year-old mare by Vertical Horizon out of Jerrys Girl, Beep Bop A Lula is trained by driver David Kelly, who co-owns with Don McDougall and Dan McDougall of Calgary, Alta. The victory marked her third win of the season and her ninth lifetime. After going winless in 22 starts last year, Beep Bop A Lula has turned things around in 2025, now boasting three victories from 10 starts, including this win against the track’s top mares. With this victory, her seasonal earnings increased to $21,595, bringing her career total to $121,303.
