Illinois conceived and foaled pacing fillies took center stage at Maywood Park on Thursday night as a field nine state-bred sophomores battled in the $20,000 Desperate Lady
Stake.
Proving that she will be a force to be reckoned with in this division, Kay Willis & Richard Beere’s Native Hotspur once again rolled to a front-stepping triumph in 1:55.4. Sam Widger gunned the daughter of Ft Apache Hanover to the lead from post six, and she cleared to the top shortly past a :28.1 opener.
She proceeded to lay down middle splits of :57 and 1:27 before kicking home in :28.4 to seal the deal. The Nelson Willis-trained miss defeated Perky B Skipalong and Park Lane Rhythm.
“She proved last year she had plenty of talent and I really think that she’s going to be up near the top of the division all season long if she stays healthy,” said driver Sam Widger.
It was the second win of the season in as many tries for Native Hotspur, who was bet down to be the 3-5 favourite. She has put together a 5-4-2 career record in 16 starts, and she banked $75,727 to date.
