Hello Carlo, a seven-year-old Carry The Message gelding out of the Supergill mare Last Turn, won the $10,000 Open Handicap Trot in 1:58.3
for owner Mario Caponi, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio at Buffalo Raceway Friday night.
Hello Carlo ($10.80), leaving from Post 2 in the field of seven and driven by reinsman Chris Page, settled in third as eventual second place finisher Australian Stock (Ron Beback, Jr.) cut the early fractions, :29.2 to the quarter pole and :59.3 to the half. Hello Carlo made a strong backside brush, and hit the three-quarters with the lead, in 1:29.1. A :29.2 last quarter-mile put the winner five and a half lengths in front at the wire. Perfect Man, the favourite in the race, came in third.
It was the third win this season for Hello Carlo, whose winning time established a new season’s mark. Trained by Larry Clabaugh, the $5,000 share of the winning purse put Hello Carlo’s season bankroll at $7,800 and $159,594 lifetime.
