After going home empty handed for three straight starts, Southwind Ion stepped up her game and came away victorious in Saturday’s $8,500 Preferred 3 for filly and mare pacers at Flamboro Downs.
J Harris tucked Southwind Ion into the two-hole early and tracked Drivingthedragon N through fractions of :28.1, :58.2 and 1:27.4. Southwind Ion overtook that front-stepping foe in the late going and her :27.4 final quarter earned her the 1:55.4 score by 2-1/2 lengths over Bad Night Mare. Drivingthedragon N faded to finish third.
Craig Gilmour trains the four-year-old daughter of Sportswriter-Its Only Rocknroll, who was sent off as the 7-5 favourite, for owner Steve Mihalic of Burlington, Ont. The victory improved her 2018 record to 4-2-1 from 13 starts. The 11-time winner bumped her overall cash stash to $114,869.
