'Diablo' Takes Windsor's Open Trot

A runner-up in his last two Open Trot starts at Windsor Raceway, first over Whitesand Diable was determined to reach the winner's circle this time out and held off the late closers in Wednesday's $13,000 edition

The popular Twin B Excalibur (Danny Johnson) led the field of nine through fractions of :27.3, :58.3 and 1:27.3 while Whitesand Diablo and Gene Piroski advanced first up from fifth. The 5-1 fifth wore down the pacestter past the third quarter mark before being confronted by second over Mischievous Jesse (Marc St. Louis Jr.). Digging in down the stretch, Whitesand Diablo prevailed over that foe by a quarter-length in 1:58.1. Winzel (Don Rankin Jr.) finished two lengths behind in third.

Whitesand Diable paid $12.60 to win for the 29th time in his career. The eight-year-old Angus Hall-Yankee Mission gelding, who is now three-for-11 this season, is owned by trainer Kelly Goodwin and Timothy Marken of Michigan. The lion's share of the purse lifted his bankroll to $190,944.
