It was upset city in Thursday’s opening leg of the Celias Counsel Series at Woodbine Racetrack thanks to victories by Tosca and Just Call Me Lady.
Tosca, who was sent off at 7-1, tracked cover before rallying home in :28.1 en route to posting a 1:56.4 score for trainer/driver Per Henriksen. The three-year-old daughter of Muscle Mass-Southern Senorita prevailed by three-quarters of a length over K D Bella, who supplied the field with fractions of :27, :57 and 1:27.4. Wings Of Ballykeel came on late to finish third.
Steve Organ of Aurora and ASA Farm of Norwood, Ontario own the youngster, who was making her 2014 debut. She assembled a 1-1-1 record from five trips postward as a rookie. She returned $16.50 to her backers.
Just Call Me Lady used the same approach to pulling off the mini-upset in the second division for driver Trevor Ritchie and trainer Blake MacIntosh, who co-owns the trotting lass with partners Anne Campbell and Stephen Waldman. Just Call Me Lady vaulted off cover turning for home and used a :28.3 closing panel to win by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:57.2 over race favourite Miss Everything. Fashion Goddess was third.
The three-year-old daughter of Angus Hall-Brown Eyed Girl, who was a two-time winner during her rookie season, is now 1-for-2 to begin her 2014 campaign. Her share of the $15,000 purse lifted her lifetime earnings to $35,549. She paid $8.10 to win.
Multiple handicappers managed to come up with the winning comination of 4-9-8-5-2 in Thursday's Jackpot Hi 5 wager, and as a result Friday's Jackpot Hi 5 will feature a carryover of $267,016.44.
