Astute proved to be the best in Sunday's featured $9,000 Winners Over/Not Listed Preferred Handicap Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway as he romped to a wide open upset win ahead of Bestofthebest Hanover and last week's winner Pieraz.

Leaving from post five in the nine-horse affair, Astute and driver Sylvain Lacaille quickly took the leading role and carved out panels of :27.4, :56.1 and 1:24.3 en route to a career-best 1:53.3 score by over five lengths. Bestofbest Hanover (Melanie Plourde) rallied from the backfield to place while favourite Pieraz (Denis St. Pierre) finished third after a long first over journey.

Astute paid $18.40 to win.

Isabelle Darveau trains and owns the Astreos-Armbro Tarte gelding, who earned his second win 10 starts during his six-year-old campaign.
