Despite getting off to a slow start, Firethorn was way too much for the competition to handle in Thursday’s $13,000 Preferred at Rideau Carleton Raceway
.
Firethorn, who got away sixth in the group of eight, watched Inspired Art throw down an opening panel in :27.3 before being overtaken by the pocket sitter, Mats Havin A Ball. That one led the field to the mid-way point in :56.1, but race favourite Firethorn was starting a rally for driver John MacDonald.
Firethorn accelerated quickly as the field moved into the backstretch, and he was up to take over command at the three-quarter pole in 1:25. A :29.2 final frame was more than enough for Firethorn to post the 2-3/4 lengths decision over Stonebridge Magnum in 1:54.2. Taking home the show dough was Inspired Art.
Ron MacDonald trains the five-year-old son of Dragon Again-Drawing Card for J P Stables of Winchester, ON. The victory was the gelding’s fifth of the season from 10 tries, and it was the 21st of his career. To date, the pacer has stashed away more than $203,000.
