The Light Speed showed speed and grit in the $10,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday, April 13, capturing his second straight victory at the top level.
In a field of eight, Full Horse (Stephane Brosseau) had the early advantage by a neck, but it didn’t last long. The Light Speed and driver Guy Gagnon surged to the front from post eight, clearing to the lead by a :27.1 opening quarter. Light The Torch (Pascal Berube) followed the move and secured the pocket trip. Just before the :56.2 half, Early Action (Robert Shepherd) launched a first-over move to challenge the leader.
By the three-quarter mark in 1:23.3, Early Action was matching strides with the leader, but The Light Speed dug in gamely under pressure and held firm through the lane to win in 1:52.3 by a full length. Light The Torch battled on for second, while Early Action held on for third.
A seven-year-old gelded son of Moon Beam-Jayma, The Light Speed is trained and driven by Guy Gagnon for owner Michel Nolette of Princeville, Que. The victory pushed his seasonal earnings to $17,530 and brought his career total to $450,989 from 62 lifetime wins.
