After a previous arrangement fell through, Blood Money has secured a new home to remain in P.E.I. for his second season at stud.

“It wasn’t looking good at all,” said the stallion's owner, Dr. Mitchell Downey, in terms of finding a farm in P.E.I. for the horse to stand. “After speaking with Marc Campbell at the end of February [the horse's most recent trainer/driver], he just couldn’t commit to the schedule of trucking the horse three times a week to have him collected. It was a hard decision because Marc really likes the horse and his crew did a great job with him, especially at the end of the season.”

It was apparent that after exhausting several calls to a number of trainers, the horse wasn’t going to be part of the Atlantic Sires Stakes due to residency rules that state the stallion has to live in P.E.I.

“I had several calls this spring, one from a guy in Quebec who just loves the horse and still wanted to breed to him despite him being in New Brunswick and not eligible to the sires stakes,” stated Downey.

As luck would have it, an out-of-the-blue call from fellow breeder Bruce Wood opened a door. Ron Matheson would be having a stall come open around May 1.

“I’ve known Ronnie for a long time," said Downey. "When I first graduated vet school in ‘05 I had the pleasure of doing some work for him. Ron is a top notch horseman and I couldn’t be happier.

“A real thanks has to go out to Bruce. He made this happen.”

Blood Money bred 38 mares during his inaugural season at stud in 2022, and his stud fee for this year remains the same at $1,000 plus HST.
