The Ontario Racing Commission has announced approval of race-date applications for 14 racetracks this summer, including Hanover Raceway.
Hanover will host 20 live days of harness racing due to a special funding arrangement made with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and the Horse Racing Transition Panel.
The track's general manager, Gord Dougan, says that Hanover's opening night will be Saturday, May 4 at 7:15 p.m., which coincides with the Kentucky Derby.
Dougan says although the weather has thrown a damper into getting the racetrack ready, he expects the track to hold its first qualifying session at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 4 and live racing at 7:15 p.m.
Dougan says it has been a very stressful and difficult year for many people in rural Ontario, as horse racing affects not only the staff at the racetrack, but horse owners, breeders, trainers and drivers, feed suppliers, veterinarians and many more across the entire rural community.
Dougan is happy to announce partnerships have been created with many of last year’s sponsors, and some new ones, to create an exciting atmosphere for fans.
Opening Day will include special prizes for the lady and gentleman in attendance with the best decorated hat, in honour of Kentucky Derby Day.
