Grey Sea went wire-to-wire in the $10,000 Fillies & Mares Open Handicap Pace on Thursday, April 10 at Fraser Downs.

Three battled for early position, but it was Grey Sea, driven by John Abbott, who surged to the front. B On The Hunt (Phil Giesbrecht) tucked into the pocket, while 1-5 favourite Born A Spy (Brandon Campbell) settled into third. The opening quarter was paced in :27 and the half reached in :56.2. Midway down the backside, Born A Spy tipped out and continued to apply pressure around the final turn. But in the stretch, Grey Sea dug in gamely, fending off her fast-closing rivals and going the distance to win in 1:53.3 by three-quarters of a length. B On The Hunt benefitted from the pocket ride and finished well for second, while Arrhythmic Dream (Scott Knight) rallied strongly for third.

A six-year-old mare by Custard The Dragon out of Preference, Grey Sea is trained by Gord Abbott for Seaspray Stables Ltd. of Nanaimo, B.C. The win marked her first of the 2025 season, boosting her seasonal earnings to $12,800. With 24 career victories, her lifetime total now stands at $198,550.

The upset winner returned $17.80 to win.
