Three-year-old fillies kicked off the first leg of the Ontario Sired Spring Series on Thursday, April 10 at Woodbine Mohawk Park, with Roxie Hart and The Lies We Tell delivering the fastest miles in their respective divisions.
The evening featured four $18,000 divisions—two for pacers and two for trotters. The series is open to Ontario-sired three-year-olds who have not earned more than $30,000 in 2024.
The quickest trotting division went to Roxie Hart ($3.50), who powered to victory off a first-over trip with Tyler Borth in the bike. She stopped the clock in 2:00.2, finishing 1-1/2 lengths in front over a track rated ‘good.’ Core Resolve (Todd Ratchford) closed strongly for second, while Nightingale (Jody Jamieson) completed the top three.
A daughter of Musical Rhythm out of Rockin With Dewey, Roxie Hart is trained by Ben Baillargeon, who co-owns with Jeff Baillargeon of Guelph, Ont. The win marked her first of the 2025 season, boosting her earnings to $10,440 and her career bankroll to $28,340 from three lifetime victories.
The second trotting split went to Debra ($5.60), who scored in 2:01.2 with Bob McClure at the controls. Trained by Bill McClure, who co-owns with Ryan McClure, the Muscle Mass–Gradabra filly notched her first win of the season and fourth of her career. Debra added $9,000 to her 2025 total and now has $36,150 in career earnings.
On the pacing side, the fastest division belonged to longshot The Lies We Tell ($53.20), who converted a perfect pocket trip into a determined victory for driver Damian MacLellan. Tipping out around the final turn, she surged late to win in 1:56.4 by half of a length over a track that had been downgraded to ‘sloppy’. Early leader Kandy Kiss (Tyler Borth) held for second, while 9-5 favourite Coeuratout Du Lac (J.R. Plante) rounded out the top three.
The Lies We Tell, a Bettors Delight–Sudden Passing filly, broke her maiden with this effort, boosting her seasonal earnings to $9,000 and her lifetime total to $11,000. She is trained by Kyle Bossence for owner Jesse Gebhardt of Hanover, Ont.
The final pacing division went to Whiskey Blue Chip ($3.60), who cruised to a 1:57.1 victory with Mario Baillargeon at the lines. It marked the second win of the season and third lifetime for the filly, owned and trained by Bill McClure of Brampton, Ont. She now sports 2025 earnings of $33,480 and $49,215 on her career resume.
The second leg for the fillies is scheduled for Thursday, April 17. The colts and geldings will begin their series on Friday, April 11, with their second leg also set for April 11. Both $40,000 finals are slated for Saturday, April 26.
