Cheddar Bay proved triumphant in his return to the top class after going gate-to-wire in Monday's (April 10) $13,000 Preferred at The Raceway at the Western Fair District.
J Harris was at the controls of Cheddar Bay, the bettors' choice in the card finale, when he sent him speeding off the gate. The pair cleared to the top and covered the panels in fractions of :27.1, :56.4 and 1:24.4 before crossing the finish line 1-1/4 lengths in front in 1:54.2. Heza Handy Man (Mike Horner) got up for second and Hollys Treasure (Garrett Rooney) was third.
Cheddar Bay is trained by Peter Core for owners Donald and Heather McGregor of Camlachie, Ont. The seven-year-old son of Betterthancheddar has a record of 18-19-12 in 96 starts to go along with $225,534 in career earnings. Of his 10 starts in 2023 so far, Cheddar Bay has only been out of the money once and has had four Preferred wins, one second and one third.
