After qualifiers were cancelled on back-to-back at Mohawk Racetrack, it came as no surprise to see the entry box flooded with names for this morning’s session.
Apple Delight, who captured the finals of last year’s Damsel Pacing Series and the Huronia Pacing Series, kicked off this morning’s action with a 1:55.1 tally for the tandem of trainer Bill Companion and driver Jack Moiseyev.
Southwind Madonna, an O’Brien Award finalist in 2008, was three-lengths in arrears of the winner in her first charted line since being sidelined with an injury. Darryl MacArthur handled the lines for trainer Carl MacArthur.
OSS graduate Keystone Titan returned from a long layoff to take the second qualifier in a time of 2:00 for trainer John Kopas and driver Randy Waples. The four-year-old son of Mr Lavec, who missed the end of his freshman season and all of his sophomore campaign as a result of an injury, stashed away close to $150,000 in his rookie season.
There were a number of Pepsi North America Cup eligibles in action this morning at the Campbellville, ON oval including Allamerican Improv, who won his tilt in a time of 1:56.3 for trainer James Graham and driver Paul MacDonell. The son of Artiscape used a final quarter clocked in :27.4 to post the victory in his first qualifying attempt of the season. He went 5-for-9 as a rookie and banked $127,926.
OK Boromir took Qualifier 11 in a time of 1:53.4 – the fastest mile of the morning – for the tandem of trainer Frank Baker, Jr. and driver Luc Ouellette. The son of No Pan Intended cruised through fractions of :28.1, :57.3 and 1:26.1 before kicking home in :27.3. It was more than 15 lengths back to fellow NA Cup-preppers Sombrero Blue Chip, who finished second, and Mr Terror, who was third.
