The 137th season of harness racing kicked off at Truro Raceway on Sunday with former Ontario competitor King Of Kingston winning the featured pace for trainer-driver Darren Crowe.

King Of Kingston converted a pocket trip into a 1:57.3 five and three-quarter length victory in the $1,225 Winners Over Handicap Pace. Putnams Force and Ryan Ellis finished second while pacesetter P H Bestman and Kenneth Parker Jr. ended up third.

The four-year-old Royal Mattjesty-Caribbean gelding, an eight-time winner with $38,896 earned, was purchased early last month by David MacDonald of Halifax, N.S.

Ellis, who clinched the driving title on the last card of the 2011 season over Crowe, picked up where he left scoring three wins on this 10-race opening card. Crowe and Earnest Laffin drove two winners and Kenneth Greene had a training double.
