On Sunday afternoon (March 8) at Century Downs, Outlaw Allie Oops moved to the lead by the half and went on to win her eighth consecutive race.

Jamie Gray was in the race bike behind the Joe Ratchford trainee. After having started from the rail and gotten away in third, Gray stepped on the gas and the Blue Burner lass responded in turn during Race 4, which was a conditioned pace that carried a purse of $6,800.

Outlaw Allie Oops made the lead in the third quarter of the dash and had opened up seven lengths by the time she flashed the three-quarters of a mile clocking in 1:27.1. She cruised home to notch a four and a half-length win in 1:57.2 for Ratchford, who also owns the mare. She returned $4.70 on every successful $2 win wager.

The official kick off of Century Downs’ 2020 meet of live harness racing took place on Sunday, and it was the Sportswriter mare Savemedasportspage that recorded the first win during the program.

Savemedasportspage, who was handled by Jim Jungquist for trainer Rod Starkewski, got away fourth from Post 3 before working into the second-over position in the back half. The bay shook loose and had what it took to get up for a head win in 1:59.3. Andrew Scott (of Edmonton, Alta.) and Kim Baxter (Campbellville, Ont.) hold the ownership papers on Savemedasportspage.

Challenging winter weather conditions in January had forced Century Mile in Edmonton to reschedule two of its live cards of racing to Century Downs. Those cards of racing were then contested at the Calgary area oval on January 26 and February 2. Although Century Downs’ March 8 program is technically the third of the track’s 2020 live schedule, it is still the official kickoff of the track’s anticipated meet.

Live racing at Century Downs is scheduled to take place every Sunday, and the track will be adding Saturday cards to its program in April. From there on out, Century Downs will mostly run on a Saturday-Sunday schedule – with a few Wednesdays in June and July – though August 16.
