The perfect pocket trip was just what Outlaw Spiced Rum ordered as she paced to victory in the $10,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace, which highlighted the eight-race Fraser Downs card on Thursday, March 6.
Leaving from post two with Brandon Campbell, Outlaw Spiced Rum secured the pocket ride after stinging 4-5 favourite Grey Sea (John Abbott) through a blistering quarter of :26.2. After a half of :55.2, the lead pair scooted away as Grey Sea throttled to three-quarters in 1:23.1.
Turning for home, Outlaw Spiced Rum tipped out and the battle commenced with Grey Sea. Slugging it out late, Outlaw Spiced Rum got the better of Grey Sea late to score by a head in 1:52.4. In High Cotton (David Hudon) rallied from last in the field of five to finish third, beaten only a length by the winner.
The clocking was a career best for Outlaw Spiced Rum, taking a full second off her previous mark. A career winner in 31 of 90 outings, the seven-year-old daughter of Blue Burner-Billie J Blue Chip is owned and trained by Rod Therres and sports lifetime earnings of $175,522.
