The 2008 Prince Edward Island Standardbred Horse Owners Association was held at the Dutch Inn Saturday night with 2008 O’Brien award winner Paul MacDonell as the keynote speaker.

The night’s big winner was Ricarras Sun. He took home Horse of the year, pacer of the year, and three year old colt pacer. Raised by Lowell Balderston, and owned by Ken McInnis, Ricarras Sun earned over $31,500 in 2008, taking a record of 1.56.1 under trainer Trevor Hicken. He was driven by Kenny Arsenault, Brian MacPhee, and Gilles Barrieau.

Standardbred Canada owner of the year was Ian Smith. Sponsored by Standardbred Canada, the inaugural award winner is one of the most dedicated and longest serving owners in the Province. He was the owner of former World Champion Rumpus Hanover, numerous top stakes winners in both Canada and the United States, and in 2008 owned Gold Cup and Saucer winner Pownal Bay Matt.
