A lucrative new race following a buy-in format is in the works to launch this year for Atlantic-sired two-year-old colts.

According to a saltwire.com article, plans are underway to launch what could be the richest two-year-old race held in Atlantic Canada with the goal of racing officials to sell at least 16 $5,000 buy-ins to local owners.

Inspired by the Mohawk Million, Prince Edward Island horseman Scott Bell proposed the idea for an Atlantic event following a similar buy-in format on social media and received strong support including Anthony Stymest, chairman of Truro Raceway Ltd., committing its Nova Scotia half-mile track as the host venue and 13 owners already expressing interest in participating.

The race will take place following the regular Altantic stakes season to avoid scheduling conflicts and is tentatively set for Nov. 5.

“The money comes from the Maritimes and will stay in the Maritimes,” Bell told saltwire.com. “It’s going to help people who raise horses and help the prices at the yearling sale. It’s going to bring attention to the sport.”

With 16 starters, there would be a $60,000 main event for the top eight colts based on their four fastest charted miles at time of declaration and the next eight declaring in going to a $20,000 consolation.

"It should make more exciting stake races all year because no one will be backing down quarters because they will want to be in the fast miles,” said Bell.

Complete details and conditions for the race have not been finalized but are expected to be announced in the coming week with starting slots to be sold until mid-April. A companion filly event is also under consideration.
