A set of Preferred events went postward Sunday evening at Flamboro Downs, and longshot players rejoiced when War Filly crossed the line first in the $7,500 affair for filly and mare pacers.
War Filly, sent off at odds of 31-1, shadowed pacesetting Mach Magic through splits of :28.1, :57.4 and 1:26.3 before using a :29.2 kicker to win by a nose over the late-driving Regal Luck in 1:56.1. Race favourite Mach Magic had to settle for third prize.
Bruce Richardson mapped out the sweet trip for the five-year-old daughter of Mach Three-Elite Avatar. Trainer Jack Powell co-owns the mare with Brad Powell, and together they watched the homebred rack up the eighth win of her career. She’s banked just shy of $100,000 to date.
In the $7,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers it was Proven Desire scorching the oval in 1:53.1 and posting an eye-catching triumph for trainer/driver Jason Ryan.
The five-year-old son of Proven Lover-Shark Like Lady rolled the field through panels of :27.2, :56.4 and 1:25.2 before scooting home in :27.4 to win by 4-1/2 lengths over Redonkulous. Win One Soon took home the show dough.
Blair Hansen of Charlottetown, PE owns the 17-time winner who bumped his lifetime earnings to $141,120 with the victory.
