On Monday, March 2, Woodford County fire chief John Varner announced the cause of the February 25 barn fire in Kentucky that claimed the lives of six Thoroughbred yearlings.

According to a report by the Lexington Herald-Leader, Varner announced on Monday that the fire at Chanteclair Farm was caused by a water bucket heater and that the final cause of the fire will be classified as ‘accidental.’

The fire affected two barns. There was 40 to 50 feet between the two barns that caught fire, but only one of the structures houses horses (the other barn contained hay).

The article state that the 260-acre farm was founded in 1995 by the late Prince Saud bin Khaled and was purchased in 2013 by former San Diego Padres owner John Moores and partner Charles Noell.
