Part Shark, Bertorico and Outofthefryingpan all had something in common on Monday – they won their respective Preferred assignments at Western Fair

Raceway.

The expectations, pari-mutuelly speaking, were very high on Part Shark in the $13,500 Preferred Pace, and the four-year-old son of Four Starzzz Shark had no problem getting the job done for trainer Wayne Preszcator.

Doug McNair, who enjoyed a four-win day at the office, rolled the gelding through fractions of :27.3, :57.4 and 1:27.1 before scooting home in :28.2 to finish off his foes in 1:55.3. Sent off as the 2-5 favourite, Part Shark defeated Grand Bend Turbo and Logan M.

Owned by Barbara and James Lehman of Waterloo, Robert Patterson of Caledon and Wayne Preszcator of Exeter, ON, Part Shark won for the third time this season and for the eighth time in his career. He is closing in on $130,000 in lifetime earnings.

Bertorico turned in a front-stepping score of his own in the $13,500 Preferred Trot, but in contrast to Part Shark – the Nick Boyd student was considered by most as an outsider.

Let go at odds of 7-1, Doug McNair hustled the six-year-old Lindy Lane gelding through splits of :27.4, :57.4 and 1:27.2 before trotting home in :31.1 to seal the deal by a head in 1:58.3. Connected Yankee was the runner-up and Sonny Vale rounded out the top three.

Susan Hutton of Burlington, ON holds the papers on the 18-time winner, who has put together a 5-1-0 record in 11 starts so far this season. The lion’s share of the purse bumped his career cash stash to $160,308.

Trainer Meg Crone had Outofthefryingpan crackin’ tight despite a lengthy layoff, and as a result the four-year-old No Pan Intended miss held on for a narrow score in the $11,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace. Anthony Haughan mapped out the 1:55.2 victory for the mare, who fended off Sammy Syd – winner of last week’s Fillies & Mares Preferred – and Lady Latte.

Crone and Haughan of Cambridge, ON share ownership on the pacer, who enjoyed a wonderful 2009 campaign. She put together a 9-4-2 record from 24 trips postward while banking in excess of $83,000 in the process.
