NYRA Makes Deep Cuts

Reacting to the demise of Aqueduct Entertainment Group as casino operator at Aqueduct and financial losses as a result of New York City OTB’s bankruptcy, the New York Racing Association has terminated 12 staffers who were earning a total of $1.4 million a year

NYRA did not release names, citing privacy, but reports said John Ryan, a senior VP and chief administrative officer, headed the list, losing his $295,000-a-year job.

Others in the purge were Ryan’s secretary, Gina Toner; head of group sales, Debbie Solomine; director of purchasing, Mary Jean Coscia; and Saratoga operations manager Kevin Gremillion.

NYRA president and CEO Charles Hayward called the firings “a difficult, but unfortunately necessary decision that was dictated by the current economic downturn and NYRA’s current challenging financial situation.”
