On straight party lines, the Kentucky Senate passed, 21-17, a bill to raise purses by adding a 1.5% tax on advance deposit wagering at the state’s racetracks

.

The tally saw all 20 Republicans and one Independent vote for the measure and all 17 Democrats oppose it.

KEEP, the Kentucky Equine Education Project, issued a statement saying, “we are astounded that Senate Republicans have once again ignored the pleas of the horse industry to help level our competitive playing field, and have instead chosen to pass a tax increase on our struggling signature industry.”

Former governor Julian Carroll denounced the move. Senator Kathy Stein asked, “what are we doing?” and spokesman John Asher called it “disappointing.”
