A quick-but-tiring pace aided Freddy Bear to vault from off the speed and land an open-length victory at odds of 11-1 in the $10,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 3 Pace at Flamboro Downs on Sunday (March 28).
Big Mach N sped to the front while Ideal Jet, launching from post 7, settled into the pocket moving to a :26.2 opening quarter. With the tempo slowing to a :56.2 half, Shades Of Bay barreled off the pylons from fourth after Big Mach N and remained alongside the pacesetter to three-quarters in 1:25.2. Meanwhile Freddy Bear caught Shades Of Bay’s cover to race second over and catapulted off a helmet into the final turn. Off the turn, Freddy Bear scooted clear of the competition and hit the finish three-and-a-half lengths better than closing Capitano Italiano. Silver Beast, who sat last, rallied for third.
Returning $24.50 to win, Freddy Bear won his 16th race from 128 starts, earning $219,000. Trainer Jason Ryan drove the seven-year-old Western Terror gelding for owner 1187422 Ontario Inc.
