Nazko Finally Gets Up In Mares Open

Nazko Finally overcame long odds and a four and half length deficit in the final quarter of the featured $12,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace at Northlands Park to give trainer-driver Gerry Hudon a Friday night double

Jennas Pass (Kelly Hoerdt) and favourite Goodbadanddeugly N (J.F. Gagne) traded turns on the lead through opening stations of :28 and :57.4 in the ninth race main event. At the half, Nazko Finally moved out from sixth and picked up cover from Starring Role (Brandon Campbell), who touched down on the front before three-quarters in 1:26.3 and opened up four lengths on the field. In response, Nazko Finally fired off a :28.4 final frame to track down the leader. The 14-1 longshot prevailed in 1:56.2 by three-quarters of a length. Lady And Thetrench (Keith Clark) rallied from the back of the pack to get third.

The winning four-year-old As Promised mare out of Jans Desire returned $31.30 to win. Her second victory in seven 2010 outings raises her seasonal bankroll to $18,632 for owners Bill Boden of Vancouver, B.C. and Monica Hudon of Edmonton, Alta.
