Armycaptin Hanover clung to victory in the $13,500 Preferred Pace on Saturday afternoon (March 25) at Century Downs to pull a 12-1 upset while Electric Amadeus stormed home to her seventh consecutive win in taking the co-featured $10,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 2 Pace.
In the feature, Armycaptin Hanover floated away fifth while odds-on favourite Shark Week cleared control past a :26.3 first quarter. Trainer-driver Kelly Hoerdt then hustled Armycaptin Hanover past the stands first time and loomed to equal terms with Shark Week through a :57.2 half. Once clearing command on the backside, Armycaptin Hanover carried his momentum to three-quarters in 1:26.2 and held his ground all through the lane to keep a head in front of a fast-charging Icy Blue Scooter in a 1:55.3 mile with Crackle N Burn, off a first-over push, settling for third. Shark Week, after setting most of the pace, faltered with broken equipment and finished last of the seven.
Co-owned by Hoerdt with Blair Corbeil, Armycaptin Hanover won his 33rd race from 111 starts and has now banked $232,976. The seven-year-old gelding by Captaintreacherous paid $26.40 to win.
Electric Amadeus took an off-the-pace route in the co-featured Fillies and Mares Preferred 2 Pace to claim her seventh straight victory. The seven-year-old Rockin Amadeus mare sat last of the six through a :28.3 first quarter and :58.2 half before driver David Kelly caught cover from Gold Onthehorizon to three-quarters in 1:27.3. As Gold Onthehorizon’s bid levelled off the turn, Kelly kicked Electric Amadeus off cover and soared through the lane to post a 4-1/4-length win in 1:56.3 with Saphire Blue taking second. Outlawstormywether overcame a shuffle to finish third and Gold Onthehorizon held fourth.
Brinsley Brooking Lutz trains Electric Amadeus and co-owns the mare with Harvey Jaeger. She won her 14th race from 42 starts and has now earned $60,430. Electric Amadeus paid $7.30 to win.
