Although he has limited experience in charted races, many are singing the praises of 17-year-old Joe Bongiorno. “I’ve basically seen all of the top drivers in the country and he (Bongiorno) is as advanced
as they were at his age. He came to me with an advanced knowledge for his age. He has a good understanding of what is going on in a race.”
The above quote is from horseman George 'Buzzy' Sholty, who sees Bongiorno at Showplace Farms in Millstone Township, New Jersey on a daily basis.
Sholty's assessment of Bongiorno comes via an article by the News Transcript, which has also shined light on the fact that the youngster was recently named the United States Harness Writers’ Association's National Amateur Driver of the Year for 2010. The awards ceremony took place February 27 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The report explains that Bongiorno is quick to say that Sholty has had much to do with his success thus far. “Buzzy Sholty has taught me everything,” he was quoted as saying.
Bongiorno also states that driving icons Michel Lachance and Cat Manzi have also taken him under their wing and have been very helpful in his racing maturation process.
