Too Salty proved to be too speedy for the competition to handle in Monday’s $16,000 Open Handicap
at Pompano Park. Joe Pavia, Jr. guided the trotter to an impressive score in the featured event.
Keystone Empire shot to the early lead and laid down panels of :27.3 and :56 before rolling into a break when challenged in the third quarter. Slave Dream, who was sent off as the even-money favourite, took over command at that point and rolled the field to the three-quarter pole in 1:25.2.
Too Salty managed to track that one’s cover before using a :29.2 final frame to seal the deal in a time of 1:55. Farmer Jones finished three-quarters of a length back in second while Slave Dream was forced to settle for third prize in the six-horse affair.
Trainer Doug Miller co-owns the five-year-old son of SJs Caviar with William Weaver III of Freehold, NJ. The win was the second of the season for the career winner of $100,464.
