Of the horses entered to qualify on Saturday, March 21 at Woodbine Mohawk Park, the one with the most aura delivered a performance indicating a return to form and a return to the racing wars is imminent.
Calicojack Hanover, a finalist for Older Pacing Horse honours at the 2025 O'Brien Awards, made his second appearance of the year during the nine-dash session previously slated for Friday but shifted due to inclement weather. The Luc Blais trainee qualified with a 1:55 mile eight days ago for Tyler Jones, closing in a brisk :26.1 to finish third. He finished first this time around, stopping the clock in 1:54.3.
With Jones at the controls once again, Calicojack Hanover followed pacesetter Livinthebeachlife (Louis-Phillipe Roy) through moderate fractions of :28.3, :58 and 1:27.3 before angling out to challenge in the stretch. Pacing home in :26.4, Calicojack Hanover collared the early leader and hit the wire 1-1/4 lengths the best. Livinthebeachlife stayed for second and Lamborghini Lou (James MacDonald) completed the top trio.
Owned by Determination of Montreal, Que., five-year-old Calicojack Hanover (Captaintreacherous-Charisma Hanover) sports a mark of 1:49 taken as a four-year-old with more than $518,000 in career earnings. Last seen in pari-mutuel action at Yonkers Raceway this past December competing in the MGM Grand Prix Pacing Series, he's one of 33 horses eligible to the upcoming MGM Borgata Pacing Series at Yonkers with the first leg slated for Monday, March 30.
